HOWARD MENARY, F.S.M.A.E.

Howard Menary, FSMAE passed away on 24th February 2016

Howard was a lifelong model aircraft enthusiast who started flying in 1943 with a KK Ajax. He rejuvenated the historic Ulster MAC in 1963 when we turned to Radio Control, starting with single channel home built equipment and progressing to multi channel R/C of FAI Aerobatic models.

Howard represented Ireland at three F3A World Championships. He then became interested in Thermal Soaring and regularly flew in the BARCS Radioglide Champs in the 70's and 80's.

In later years he set a British National, F3A R/C Piston Motor Duration record with a 12 hour 38 minute 15 seconds flight on 16th August 1996, at Nutts Corner, County Antrim. This flight also established the Irish Duration record in the same class and the Model Aeronautics Council of Ireland presented him with a medal to mark the achievement.

He also did a long distance flight across Belfast Lough from Carrickfergus, County Antrim to Crawfordsburn, County Down. Sponsors contributed more than £1,000 to a hospital unit treating children who have Cystic Fibrosis.

He was an Officer of the Model Aeronautics Council of Ireland for many years, and a founding member of the Northern Ireland Association of Aeromodellers in 1971.

It was recognized as a Sport by the NI Sports Council, the first in the UK, leading to continuing Grant Aid for competitive flying for many years

He invited three members of the BMFA to visit Northern Ireland and carry out A and B Achievement Tests. This visit from David Lloyd-Jones, Secretary of the BMFA, Chris Bromley and Ray Jones led to the formation of Area 13 of the BMFA. He represented the Area as Chairman and Council Delegate until retiring in 2009. He was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1998, and the Area made a Presentation to him on his retirement, a memorable occasion.

Howard held Royal Aero Club, Private Pilot License for both Powered aircraft and Sailplanes.

He worked for Shorts Missile System Division on Seacat, Blowpipe and Javelin. He played a large part in the development and operation of Shorts Skeet R/C target aircraft. Development flying was carried out at Llanbedr, Wales, with the Service usage taking place with the Royal Artillery, at their Firing Range in the Hebrides.

Howard will be sadly missed but long remembered

It is with regret that I have to inform you all that Annesley Anderson, has passed away and his funeral was on Thursday the 15th of October 2015 our sincere condolences and sympathy go out to his family. Annesley was a member of The Ulster Model Aircraft Club and served the Area as an Auditor for as long as I can recall.

J. ANNESLEY ANDERSON

Very many of his friends in model aircraft modelling were saddened by the death of Annesley on the 12 th October after many months of declining faculties following his illness more than ten years ago. Annesley was an engineer by training and in his early years he worked on the textile machinery at James Barbour's factory although in his later life he was the financial director at James Mc Veigh's potato and fruit market.
As his nephew Charles told at his funeral, he dismantled and entirely rebuilt his toy bike much to the surprise of his parent's so from an early age he was very much a person who liked to know how things worked and who had the hands to put them together again. It is not surprising that from his earliest years he was interested in model aircraft. He often spoke about retrieving his free-flight model from the marshy land just beside Belfast Lough before the George Best Airport was built there. His interest in aircraft and in modelling was at a time when aircraft building and their design was developing from the textile covered Tiger Moth to Concorde and when radio controlled flying was undergoing a similar development from the old E.D. transmitter to the present 2.4 mhz. equipment. There was a whole generation of people whose interest in modelling was stimulated by the Spitfire and it's part in the Battle of Britain and also by the rapid developments in jet flying. After a period in which he was a member of the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland and he was very much involved in grass track motor-cycle racing and a period when he flew with the Ulster Aircraft Club at Newtownards, Annesley joined the Ulster Model Aircraft Club where he was Treasurer and a member of the Club committee for more than thirty years.
Above all else Annesley was very much a people's person. He was always the first person to get to know a new member of the Club and to help them with their models so that they could fly them safely and feel completely at their ease. Annesley was a Club Instructor and if any member was ill or in hospital he was always one who visited them there and would let them know that they had the support of the other club members.
Annesley Anderson was for many years an Auditor on the committee of the N.I.A.A. and was one of a group when the B.M.F.A. first set up it's Area 13 in Northern Ireland . He was always involved in spreading the interest in Radio Controlled Model Aircraft across the Province and indeed the whole of Ireland . He was a frequent attender at the meetings of N.I.A. A . in Dungannon and he was well known and liked by all the members there. He will be missed very much there by all who knew him.
